چکیده

Once the domain of purely physical controls such as knobs, levers, buttons, and sliders, the vehicle dash is rapidly transforming into a computer interface. This presents a challenge for drivers, because the physics-based cues which make traditional controls easy to operate with limited visual confirmation are absent on traditional screens. We investigate the addition of programmable physics-based cues to a visual display as a method to reduce eyes-off-road time. A TPaD variable friction touchpad was installed in the Ford VIRTTEX motion driving simulator. Subjects performed target acquisition and slider adjustment tasks under visual, visual/haptic, and haptic feedback conditions. For the two tasks, we found that the visual/haptic condition resulted in 39% and 19% decreases in total eyes-off-road time per task while showing negligible differences in task performance. Subjects showed a clear preference for combined visual and haptic feedback. Author

Reducing Driver Distraction through Software

Advanced Driver Assistance (ADA) systems currently operate within vehicles, offering drivers assistance to either avoid hazardous situations, or information to make travelling easier. However, these devices have the potential to contribute to driver distraction as they require a certain level of driver attention in order to provide a benefit, taking cognitive, visual, auditory, and manual resou...

Vision-based method for detecting driver drowsiness and distraction in driver monitoring system

Jaihie Kim Yonsei University School of Electrical and Electronic Engineering 134 Sinchon-dong, Seodaemun-gu Seoul, Seoul 120-749, Republic of Korea E-mail: [email protected] Abstract. Most driver-monitoring systems have attempted to detect either driver drowsiness or distraction, although both factors should be considered for accident prevention. Therefore, we propose a new drivermonitoring me...

The existence and impact of the Psychological Refractory Period effect in the driving environment

Driver distraction from in-vehicle tasks can have negative impacts on longitudinal and lateral vehicle control and brake reaction time. The distraction problem is wellestablished in the literature, and is increasing due to advances in the functionality, availability, and number of in-vehicle systems. One approach to a solution is managing in-vehicle task presentation to reduce associated distra...

Detecting driver distraction

The increasing use of in-vehicle information systems (IVISs), such as navigation devices and MP3 players, can jeopardize safety by introducing distraction into driving. One way to address this problem is to develop distraction mitigation systems, which adapt IVIS functions according to driver state. In such a system, correctly identifying driver distraction is critical, which is the focus of th...

Wearable Driver Distraction Identification On-The-Road via Continuous Decomposition of Galvanic Skin Responses

One of the main reasons for fatal accidents on the road is distracted driving. The continuous attention of an individual driver is a necessity for the task of driving. While driving, certain levels of distraction can cause drivers to lose their attention, which might lead to an accident. Thus, the number of accidents can be reduced by early detection of distraction. Many studies have been condu...
